Environmental Planning & Regeneration
A 3 hectare disused limestone quarry in Cumbria had a legacy of special waste landfilling by construction waste over many years, and had never been properly closed and restored. Its 1 hectare lake provided a potential opportunity for the regeneration of the site to beneficial leisure use.
Our solution
EES coordinated and carried out liaison with the Planning Authority including planning policy, investigated the contaminated nature of the site, carried out topographical, tree, ecology, soils, landscape transport and drainage assessments. Site design was then carried out for the reclamation and remediation of the former brownfield site, including close liaison with the client designer, Environment Agency and local contaminated land officers.
Planning applications were assembled and submitted for a 12 then 32 leisure lodge developments, both smoothly receiving planning consent at the first attempt.
And the benefits
Our pragmatic, but technically robust approach, combined with a willingness to liaise closely with client, regulators and others, has resulted in a classic example of brownfield regeneration to a beneficial afteruse, both for the client and the local community, as well as the local tourist industry.
